As an owner of a busy Bed & Breakfast myself, I understand the additional pressures that the high season and end of financial year can place on us owner operators but this time of year is also when you are most focussed on your business so I urge you to consider this special and enjoy the benefits from belonging to a collaborative and committed Association. Your voice helps us advocate for a fair playing field for small owner operator B&B businesses. I look forward to welcoming you into our B&B host community.
This year has been a busy year for the Association supporting our members particularly in our advocacy work. We joined with TIA and other accommodation sectors, to actively lobby the Productivity Commission against its support for local bed taxes and are delighted to see that the Productivity Commission has reversed it support and now recommend local councils use the existing tools available to them to raise any additional funds they require. It was, therefore, disappointing to see the recent High Court decision upholding the Auckland Council's position of charging a targeted rate on accommodation businesses and we shall continue our opposition to this.
We worked with local accommodation providers in the New Plymouth region and submitted to the New Plymouth District Council against their proposal to limit home based short stay accommodation providers to 90 days per annum. This is still before Council (to read our submission - click here).
There are many other ways we can help support you in providing a world class service to your guests - from advocating against unwelcome proposals to helping with best practice guidelines, mentoring, education and resources. To see more on how we can help you - click here
