About the Association

New Zealand’s national association working exclusively to support bed and breakfast operators.

Bed & Breakfast Association NEW ZEALAND Incorporated is a non-profit organisation incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908.

The Association was formed in 1986 as the NZ Association of Farm and Home Hosts with advice and the support of the New Zealand Tourism Board and industry operators.

 The main aim of the Association was to create a national voice and unity amongst bed and breakfast owners and to help address the problem of varying standards throughout the country.

The Association now has a list of objectives designed to help and support its members in all areas of their businesses.

Providing shared professional expertise

The Association works for its members providing up to date information in relevant areas such as health and safety, insurance, ACC, regional rating criteria, etc., enabling members to provide a world class service to their guests by the provision of best practice guidelines, business support and training. Along with a business listing on our website, the ability to network with members in their region and by attending the annual Bed & Breakfast Conference, the Association empowers Bed & Breakfast owners to effectively manage challenges that have the potential to adversely affect the viability of their businesses.

The Association also lobbies Government and Local Bodies on issues ensuring their policies and regulations are favourable to bed and breakfast owners.  We work with other accommodation associations and tourism bodies to ensure the voice of bed and breakfast owners is heard in the tourism industry.

Providing member resources from marketing to management

Regular updates are provided to members on issues that could affect their Bed & Breakfast.  This, combined with the members’ section of our website, (an invaluable resource for Bed & Breakfast owners providing up to date news and information, and a Help Desk for members requiring advice, guidance or support from the Association),  ensures our members have all the information and resources required to run a successful business.

Membership Sectors

Membership to the Association is open to four home based accommodation sectors (with emphasis placed on home-hosting):

  • In home bed and breakfast with a maximum of 10 guests
  • Self-contained unit with a maximum of 8 guests;
  • Commercial bed and breakfast with a maximum of 20 guests; and
  • Any other home based accommodation provider that the Association, in its absolute discretion, deems suitable.

Members belonging to our Association must meet minimum quality standards and their properties are assessed on joining and thereafter at three yearly intervals – giving assurance to travellers that those properties promoting the Association logo provide a first-class quality experience.

The Board

The Association is governed by its Board (all active hosts and members of the Association) and is led by its President, Rayma Jenkins.  Rayma is the owner of an award winning bed and breakfast, Cobden Garden, Napier, and is passionate about the bed and breakfast industry.  She aims to increase awareness and value of bed and breakfasts belonging to the Association and promote the benefits of staying in bed and breakfasts to both national and international markets. Rayma is supported by five elected Board Members and the Association Secretary.
